The supermodel, who replaces longtime hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews this season, made her ballroom debut in the Season 29 premiere, which also included the addition of Derek Hough to the judges’ table. While stars Skai Jackson and Justina Machado received high marks, Twitter dolled a series of low scores to the 46-year-old supermodel.
“Can I vote @tyrabanks off of Dancing with the Star?! #DWTS,” one viewer commented.
“2 mins in and I’m over Tyra banks Expressionless face why like why #DWTS,” another remarked.
#DWTS I LITERALLY HATE TYRA BANKS ON THIS SHOW. Seriously.. bring back Tom and Erin,” one posted.
Some fans, however, believed Banks did well out of the gate.
“Unpopular opinion. #DWTS #TyraBanks did a decent job,” one viewer tweeted.
“Tyra Banks is a good host, so they made no mistake here. If anything, the show is more like its old self than it even was recently. That includes the cover singers covering classic songs in ways that let you know they’re cover singers. #DWTS,” another remarked.
Bergeron, 65, and Andrews, 42, were both axed from the series and announced their departures in July. Bergeron had been with the show since its 2005 premiere, while Andrews joined as his co-host in 2014. Andrews later said of her firing: “I felt sorry for myself and I kind of was like, this is a terrible time to lose my job because you know, we don’t know when live television is coming back … these are hard jobs to get, primetime shows.”
“I never want to be a ‘host-for-hire,’” the “America’s Next Top Model” creator said. “Tom Bergeron was like an empire with his brand and his comedic timing. What can I do to add to something that was so genius? My mom and me are sitting down and talking about all the different elements I can bring to the show. I’ll be fine; that doesn’t mean I won’t make mistakes or read the Teleprompter backwards, but live TV is about mess-ups and mistakes and calling them out when they happen.”
“Dancing with the Stars” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
